Thanks for the article Scott. Now, several months later, it's been just as valuable reading it through a second time. I'm wondering where one can best obtain the tree varieties you've mentioned here. I've just purchased a number of trees from Plant It Hawaii, however I did not see any of these ones there.
Blessings,
Ryan

I'm right there with you, right there.

One of the blessings about being here is that we can grow our own food fairly readily. Breadfruit is a gift tree for sure. ;)

Scott, this is a website I frequent concerned with sustainable methods of living on the big island. http://sensiblesimplicity.lefora.com/ forum/
The conversation there is productive and positive, if you'd like to check it out I would certainly appreciate hearing your voice.
What you and Karin do is exceptional and I think adding your thoughts and knowledge to the conversation would be really beneficial to the whole.

I have those moments too when it scares me to my core to think of the future. I think one of the most worthwhile things we can do is to work locally and familiarize as many people as we can with the idea that food unlike money grows straight from trees.

Aloha!

Up here at 1800' my 7-8 year old Samoan breadfruit has yet to fruit..well, set a small one, that, while encouraging, dropped away. Perhaps this is towards the upper edge of viable elevation for Puna. My jakfruit does produce very nice fruits. It has thrived being in the shi-shi zone off of my lanai. (Got any technique for getting that fingernail-esque shell off of the cooked seeds?) Have you found particular types of ferts that motivate your breadfruit? Mahalo.

I loved this post! I am a breadfruit fan, and one of the many paradoxes I've found since I arrived in Kinshasa 2 years ago is that there are breadfruit trees but people, though malnourished, don't eat them! I've put Google alerts for "fruit à pain" and a "breadfruit" to get more information that I can make into a flyer, that's how I found your blog. Thanks for posting!
