horse accident

lauren’ s new horse found a crevice in our lower pasture that we were not aware of and she slipped into it with both her back legs (about up to the knees). she was able to get herself out but sustained some serious wounds. nothing broken, but deep cuts that show bone. the vet gasped when he saw (he came the next day- luckily lauren had known to clean the wounds, pack and wrap them and give her some antibiotics). he looked at us and said “this is serious, if she gets an infection she will die, she may not recover from this, it will be a long road ahead. i want you to know what you are getting yourself into.” this was 2 days after the earthship in taos sold. i said “do whatever it takes to save her, if there is hope.”
the vet transported her to a stable about 2 miles away and lauren has been spending all day caring for her, helping the vet etc since thursday. she rides her bike there and back. you would be amazed at her dedication, good spirits and her courage. the vet loves her and is teaching her everything he can. she went with him to check out the horse next door who just gave birth with the vet driving down from hilo twice a day to clean it out (but first tranquilizing her, giving her 3 kinds of antibiotics (vein, muscle and oral applications).
the cuts would make you turn away. the wound had no relationship to anything alive i have ever seen. her tendon and nerve were showing on one leg and the other was down to the bone and 12 inches long with a swath of muscle missing. she hooked the top of her hoof and also cut into a joint in the back.
